Dos and Don'ts when using aspha-min®
Application of warm mix asphalt
The processing of asphalt modified with aspha-min® differs only slightly from that of conventional asphalt mixtures. We still recommend the use of non-destructive compaction measurements, however, until you have gained sufficient experience with the product under different laying conditions.
The intentional reduction of the asphalt temperature at the plant caused by adding aspha-min® shifts the laying window of the asphalt mixture. The gradual release of the water of crystallization in aspha-min® leads to a decreased viscosity of the asphalt mix and allows for good compactability even within lower temperature ranges.
During laying, emphasis should be placed on swift unloading, processing, and compaction. The laying equipment should be preheated whenever possible. When determining the target temperature at the time of transfer to the paver, please take any temperature loss at the feeder or by means of the extraction system into account. Ultimately, the temperature at the screed determines the quality of the laying.
Practical Tips
The Dos and Don'ts when using aspha-min®:
- Do keep the underground dry! Warm mix asphalt provides less thermal energy to evaporate humidity.
- Do pre-heat your laying device! Warm mix asphalt provides less thermal energy to passively heat feeder, paver and roller.
- Do check framework conditions with your asphalt supplier! How is the routing? What is the time necessary for hauling? How is the weather on site (wind, cold)? In doing so, reliable working processes are ensured.
- Do consider a possible temperature loss depending on these conditions! Using transfer verhicles and vapour extraction at the paver may substantially reduce the application temperature at the screed. Any of the conditions mentioned above may be crucial to determine the appropriate mixing temperature.
- Don't waste time! Ensure swift unloading, laying, and compacting. Any preparatory work must be completed before the asphalt mix arrives on site.
- Do call in your quality inspector! Have non-destructive compaction gauges provide support to your work in order to gain experience and routine. Check for pre-compaction at the paver as well as any furthre increase per roller pass.
